You know, 23 has always been my favorite number. It’s been well represented here in DC, but only by catchers. First, Brian Schneider donned the digits. Johnny Estrada momentarily tarnished the number, but it was redeemed a bit by Luke Montz during September call-ups.
Now, it’s time for a new 23…
Rumors are starting to fly that the Nationals are prepared to make a significant offer to Mark Teixeira. We’ve been cautioned by Dave at Bottom Feeder Baseball to not get our hopes up and frequent commenter Doug argued with me for an hour last night over whether this would be good for the franchise. But day by day and rumor by rumor, it’s hard not to get excited about this…especially when you can visualize that new Washington road jersey with “Teixeira #23” on the back sitting under your Christmas tree in a few weeks.
This weekend, John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus suggested the number could climb as high as 10 years, 200 million for the Nationals.
What do you think?

Too much money, too much time.

I’m usually against throwing huge years at guys, but we really need Tex. I say go for it.

He’s from annapolis so he might be willing to come here for a little bit less than a random team. he’s still got a lot of good years left and he fills two major needs ( healthy 1B and middle of the order power from both sides)
Show him the money!!!!

I’m getting a little ahead of myself here, but right after I buy the new Teixeira Washington road jersey, I’m having a “We’ve Got Mark!” party!

I don’t know if I think he would come to either Baltimore or Washington with both teams in their current state no matter how much money was thrown at him. At least from what I have read and heard, he’s looking to get paid — while playing for a contender.
Even if he did sign with the Nationals, would Mark stay for the duration of the contract — or if he becomes dissatisfied, would he want to be traded? Lest we forget, he left the Rangers because it looked like they were not going anywhere at time.
Despite Tom Hicks — the Rangers’ owner — with his deep coffers offering him an above market deal for a first baseman, he oped to be traded.
I’m sure Teixiera would love to play locally — however, only to an extent. If it means playing for a loser (at least for the time being), I would suspect he’d pass on the region.
At this point, I see him only playing here when his career winds down if being home means that much to him.

Manny gave me the sign to go for it.

Kristen,
First, you have a great blog and thank you for doing such a wonderful job covering the Nationals. Secondly, lololololololololololol. I love the Nats and would love to see #23 grace us with his presence but it won’t happen. My heterolifemate claims #23 will be going to the Yankees to win championships.

Thanks Ross - and everyone for the great comments.
I got the news right when I got to the gym and after answering a bunch of texts and probably irritating a lot of gym-goers, I shut it off and decided to wait till I got home to deal with the news.
It also gave me some time to think. I appreciate the heads up!
