Yikes. Lots of interesting stuff in this Newsday story. Make of it what you will.
Midweek Insider has learned that the Nationals, who fired five coaches upon the conclusion of the 2008 season, are interested in hiring Randolph as either Acta’s bench coach or third-base coach.
Also in the story…
As for Acta, friends of his believe he’d be fine with Randolph joining his staff, because Acta has his eyes set on the Mets’ job, anyway. And it’s clearly a mutual affection.
“Why do you think the Mets gave Manuel only two years?” one official from an American League club queried. “Because they want Manny.”
And one more thing:
With Acta clearly in trouble, and five jobs available on the Nats’ coaching staff, Bowden will get to pick a manager-in-waiting or two. In addition to Randolph, former Dodgers and Pirates manager Jim Tracy is on Washington’s radar.
It’s something to think about. It’s probably too much to think about. We want Manny to stay here in Washington for a long time.

Yes, we love Manny. Mannyger of the Year in 2009. Let’s hope.

I give the Newsday story a healthy Long Island discount, although I’d be happy to see Randolph come on board. (Plus Randolph does not equal minus Manny IMO.)
There are plenty of things that might happen. And more than one possible happy ending.

Interesting — I would not think Randolph would come to Washington just for the sake of having a job — however, the impact he could have with the Nationals would be profound. A proven winner, a multiple time champion, respected throughout the game (he got a raw deal in NYC, IMO).
I’d think he’d want to manage, or perhaps score a front office gig with an organization perhaps a little more conducive to winning at this stage.

although there may be some fire behind all this smoke, i wouldn’t read to too much into all this. the New York media is famous for overhyping any whispered rumor to death. while it’s true the Nats haven’t picked up Manny’s option yet, i attribute that more to how the Lerners do business than any unhappiness with Manny. seriously, how can ANYONE evaluate the tactical managerial job Manny has done to this point with the dearth of talent and injuries on top that he’s had to deal with?

Ladson wrote on this too and added that Don Baylor is a candidate for a coaching position. (Can he teach our guys to get hit by pitch more? Or will that just lead to more guys on the DL)
He certainly won’t be adding an energetic personality to the team (recall his appearances on MASN…)
I guess there are two separate stories here. The Randolph to DC thing is a-okay with me. He’s a good baseball guy who may have some good influence on the former Mets (Hernandez and Milledge, maybe he’s worked with Flores a bit?)
The scary part of the story was the Acta to NY rumors, which I don’t think any of us want to happen but consistently come up and get us all worried from time to time.

[…] Bowden would also have a potential successor to Acta. An article in the NY Post Newsday seems to be lobbying for Acta to be the Mets skipper in 2010. Of course, an article suggesting that a member of a Washington sports team wants to go […]
