Several Nats haven’t called it quits just yet…
Alberto Gonzalez: The young shortstop got the start because Guzman has the flu and Gonzalez made the most of the opportunity. He went 4 for 5, scoring 3 runs and collecting 2 RBI. Two of his hits went for extra bases.
Shairon Martis: The rookie picked up his first major league win against a tough Florida line-up. He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in 5.1 innings and struck out 5. He was rewarded with a shaving cream pie after the game.
Mike Hinckley: The lefty has certainly proved that he can be a major leaguer. His performance over the past month will merit serious bullpen consideration for next year. Last night, he worked 2 scoreless innings. In 12 games and 11.2 innings, he hasn’t given up a run.
Steven Shell: Another rookie reliever that continues to impress. Last night, Shell finished a scoreless 6th inning. In 38 games and 49 innings pitched, Shell has a 2.20 ERA.
Ryan Zimmerman: Ryan is finding his swing again. He put the Nats on the board in the 1st inning with a deep shot to left field. He went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI for the night.
Lastings Milledge: Milledge performed well in the clean-up spot last night driving in 3 runs on 3 hits.
Willie Harris: The utility veteran went 1 for 2 but drew 2 walks, scored 2 runs and stole a base. He also practiced singing the Star Spangled Banner. He has to be better than Sunday’s disaster - Tynisha Keli - who messed up the words to both the national anthem and God Bless America.
Wil Nieves: Called a great game, helping Martis secure his first win. Wil also laid down two perfect sacrifice bunts.
The good news is, Seattle snapped a 12 game losing streak to beat the Angels so we’re still in the race for Strasburg. The Marlins were eliminated from the Wild Card race with last night’s loss to the Nats. The NL East tightened with the Mets picking up a win over the Cubs and Philly losing to Atlanta.
