The duo of Martis and Montz didn’t fare too badly tonight. We thought the score of the game might have been a lot higher, but a 2-0 loss is still a loss and it marks the Nats 21st shutout this season….ew.
The Braves put a rookie, Parr, on the mound also and the Nats just couldn’t score on him. Ronnie Belliard hit three of the Nationals five hits before leaving the game with a strained groin. He is listed….all together now…day to day. Zimmerman hit a double in the 9th inning to keep his hitting streak alive, he’s hit safely in his past ten games.
Martis pitched through five innings, seemed to have a really good curve ball but he couldn’t get ahead of the hitters and walked a bunch (5). Things unraveled in the third when Kelly Johnson hit a triple followed by a walk to Chipper Jones. Brian McCann hit a sac fly to score Johnson. Martis walked three more in the fourth inning and the Braves added another run. The bullpen of Mock, Manning, Shell and Speigner kept the rest of the game scoreless.
Luke Montz looked pretty good behind the plate. He blocked a lot of pitches, recovered two wild ones quickly, and he threw out a base runner! I think both Martis and Montz have a future in the bigs sometime soon.
Nationals take on the Braves again tomorrow night in Atlanta.
