It’s official. Zimmerman will go on the 15 DL with Kory Casto getting the call-up from Columbus. This is tough…not just to see the young star out, but also because the injury prognosis keeps getting worse.
On that note, why exactly did it take Paul Lo Duca’s stint in the booth to reveal the injury? Why wasn’t an MRI done immediately when he first noticed the pain? Who’s responsible for dragging this out for so long and wasting his time that could have been spent getting second opinions and recovering? Probably noone. Afterall, noone’s at fault for the inept offense, which is about to get even uglier.
We sure hope that Zimmerman’s shoulder requires no surgery, heals fast and improves enough to get him back on the field as soon as possible.
But we’re Nats fans. We know better, don’t we.
So, now there are 8 guys on the DL including 5 of the 9 starters from the Opening Night line-up and the team’s closer.

my guess is that Zim downplayed the whole thing and wasn’t forthcoming with the severity of discomfort he felt. it’s the first itme he’s been seriously injured during the season, and much how Cordero hid his discomfort, i bet Zim did the same thing. that said, this organization has time and again taken the absolute wrong approach dealing with injury. Kearns hid his for a while too.
SOMEONE has to be the grown-up, and if the face of your team can’t take BP for three days straight, SOMEONE has to say, get it checked out. that’s what good franchises do (see Big Papi IMMEDIATELY getting MRI on his wrist after tweaking it swinging yesterday).
this team has no grown-up in charge. Jim Bowden is more interested in limiting on-line organizations coverage of his team (MUCH more on that later) than taking care of the players—or putting a decent product on the field.

I am depressed. This season went from ugly to miserable real fast. You’re right. It’s pretty comparible to the Cordero injury timeline, procedure and front office incompetence, but Zim is the franchise player. And in both cases, don’t give Manny a short roster unless you’re certain the injury is truly day-to-day bumps and bruises. Stan - please save this franchise. This is not development. This is a train wreck.

One of the great things about Manny Acta is that he doesn’t seem to fall for some of the manager cliches, and that he seems to accept some of the research done by the SABR community. So I wonder how much say he has had in the Lenny Harris hire, and how much influence he would have in making a change. It’s just hard to believe that he would be so accepting of Harris’ approach to hitting. I also have no idea how much influence a hitting coach really has on a team, but I think the last thing they need is Harris overseeing Milledge/Zimmerman/Dukes/Flores type players.
If the Lerners and kasten did decide to make a move with Bowden, do you all think Rizzo would get the job? It seems pretty obvious from his track record in Arizona as well as last year’s draft that he knows what he’s doing with development. Is that who everyone would favor?

I agree with your comments on Lenny Harris. Kristen and I were just talking about this yesterday. Harris has been working with Milledge, Dukes and Pena all season and so far they haven’t shown much improvement. Something isn’t working there. Flores on the other hand, works with Pat Corrales mostly, and is doing very well at the plate. You can draw conclusions from that I think. Something has to be done to get these guys hitting.
As far as replacing Bowden, Rizzo would be an obvious option, and might prove successful.

They need to understand what is going on with all the shoulder injuries. Is there bad preparation (stretching) before games? Are these guys doing too much weight training?

Zimmerman’s shoulder injury was caused by a head-first slide into second base up in Baltiimore. That doesn’t really fit all of the many conspiracy theories floating around out there about lack of stretching and such being the reason for all the injuries this year. Would a good pre-game stretch have let him slide into second head first without getting hurt?

Maybe they need to learn to slide feet first like every other generation did. Not all of the shoulder injuries were caused by slides. I hadn’t even realized there was a conspiracy about shoulders.
As one who has had rotator cuff injuries on both shoulders I happen to know that lack of stretching can cause a lot of problems.
I think conspiracy theories would be more applicable to steroids AND SUCH.
