Not a whole lot to report today. Practice began a bit late, around 10:15 am. The team started off again with their warm-ups and then broke into groups. The pitchers weren’t running through drills today with Aponte – instead they sat together on a far field for awhile for a group discussion, strategy session or something that required no physical activity.
We instead watched as the rest of the position players and the catchers practiced situational plays on the other fields. Catchers practiced throwing out runners and position players practiced fielding grounders, bunts and pop-ups. As always, Zimmerman looked spectacular scooping up the short bunts toward third base and beating the fictional runner out at first.
Fans were treated to another Jim segway appearance, with Jim even soaring out to the outfield for awhile.
We caught up with Charlie and Dave this morning too - Both are looking forward to getting back into their routine.
As far as bullpen sessions, Saul Rivera, Tim Redding and Jon Rauch all looked great. Rivera immediately finished a bullpen session and took the field to throw batting practice. We caught Chief, Bergmann and Smoker’s batting practice too. Chief and Hill also worked on some extra conditioning with the trainer.
Johnson and Kearns had good BP today too. Pena, Dukes and Milledge continue to impress – though Saul Rivera had some great pitches against the group of sluggers, prompting some friendly banter.
The practice came to a close with Zimmerman, Felipe, Aaron Boone, Young and Orr running extra sprints.
The routine will change tomorrow a bit as we are set for our first game and first road trip of the 2008 season against the Florida Marlins in Jupiter, FL.
