The All-Star break can’t come soon enough. While we’re certainly not as worn out as our players, I am a little excited to take a few days for myself next week, catch up with friends — be a normal person (being a baseball fan is anything but normal). To rest up for this weekend’s series, I thought the last Cubs game would be just as good on tv. Of course, when you decide to watch a game on TV, the President shows up.
Bergmann, back from a brief stint on the DL (which seemed like an eternity) continues to do just fine. It’s simply unfair that these pitchers only have a few runs to work with. Jason’s ERA was 3.47 going into last night’s game, with a 1-5 record.
Jason did a great job again last night. Pitching for 5 1/3 innings, he gave up 2 runs on 5 hits with no walks. But again, there was very little run support for Jason. Bergmann said:
“You can’t let it get to you. If you start thinking, ‘When am I going to get a run or not going to get a run?’ it affects your pitching. [The position players] are doing their jobs as best they can. They faced some good pitchers this series. The Cubs have a great staff. We’ll get the run support. They are great hitters. It’s going to happen. I’m not worried about it. My job is to throw quality innings.”
There was some offensive production, but not much. Young hit a triple to bring Zimmerman home. Kearns sacrificed to get Young home. The score was tied 2-2.
Ayala took the mound and struggled - giving up 2 runs and bringing the score 4-2. We did mount a bit of a rally in the 9th, with bases loaded. But Schneider Man drove a ball right at Ward to end the game.
We were, however, treated to another spectacular Zimmerman catch over the tarp at 3rd base.
